Day 8 The Vatican

Today, we headed off for a little exploration at the Vatican. Religion fascinates me...and I love that I have had the opportunity to explore the hub and heart of one of them. Even though my great grandmother would be spinning in her grave if she knew that I'm hanging in catholic territory! Sorry Gran! Anywayyyyy...

So, the Vatican. Is awesome. It's huge, of course. Again, Rome keeps hitting me with this. I know all this stuff is going to be huge, but coming face to face with these monuments, their size just smacks you in the face! And the Vatican doesn't disappoint! It truly is a spectacular collection of art and architecture. I highly recommend anyone to visit. And probably allow a full day. And probably don't go in the summer. Oh my goodness it was damn hot in there today!

I don't think there is a square inch in that place that isn't decorated in some way. There is so much to look at, you can't possibly see everything, or even process what you are seeing! It is all truly beautiful, but to be honest, I kind of hate that they've amassed all this stuff (and I realize what I saw today was a drop in the ocean to what they actually have!) in the name of their church. But I'm not going to go on with a religious rant. Haha. I'll keep my opinions to myself. ;-)

So...photos speak a thousand words, and I have no more words (that won't get me in trouble, anyhow. Haha), but plenty of photos! So I'll let them tell the story!

Swiss guards. I love them. :D

St Peters Square
St Peters Basilica

I got in trouble for taking this one. Meh!

Once I was done in the Basilica, we headed to the Vatican Museum...

The detail on the carvings/statues are amazing. I can't begin to imagine or understand how anyone can make something so perfect and beautiful out of chunks of rock! Incredible.
A little glimpse of the gardens....
This hall was incredible. This is one small part of it. My brain is still trying to process everything there was to see!!! And my neck is broken from trying to look at the roof everywhere! Haha
So that pretty much sums up the day. I did also see the Sistine Chapel, but I had a guard stalking me and not letting me take pictures :( so no pictures for me. Kinda annoying when loads of others were taking photos all around me, but ANYWAY!!!! It was gorgeous, of course. Another visual feast. But packed full of people, so hard to enjoy. Oh well.

Sitting down now hoping my feet recover! Maybe I'll tackle the Coloseum tomorrow!

Kel x
